John 1:29  The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Revelation 1:5 “washed us from our sins in his own blood“

Why was the sacrifice of Jesus Christ necessary?

The sacrifice of Jesus Christ was necessary to solve the problem of sin and death.  In the beginning, the first people created by God, Adam and Eve, sinned in disobeying God’s commands.

God had given a law to Adam and Eve in Genesis 2:17  “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof in dying thou shalt die.”

But they broke God’s law – Genesis 3:6 “she (Eve) took of the fruit thereof and did eat and gave also to her husband (Adam) with her and he did eat”   

After they sinned, God implemented the penalty he had foreshadowed – they became mortal and in time would die Genesis 3:19  “..dust thou art and unto dust shalt thou return.”

As a consequence, Adam and Eve’s descendants inherit a mortal nature –
Romans 5:12  “Wherefore as by one man sin entered into the world and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men..”  

The history of the world shows this to be true. All people have sinned (apart from Jesus Christ) and all people have died.

How was the problem of sin and death solved?

God caused his son Jesus Christ to be born by the virgin Mary and be the method for solving the problem.  Matthew 1:21 And she (Mary) shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

Having God as his Father enabled Jesus Christ to have a superior mental ability to overcome sin.  Psalm 80:17 ” … the son of man whom thou madest strong for thyself.”

Though sorely tempted Christ never sinned. Hebrews 4:15 “For we have not an high priest (Jesus Christ) which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.”

Jesus lived a perfectly sinless life and then allowed himself to offered as a sacrifice for the sins for those who follow him.

How does the sacrifice of Jesus Christ help us?

 God offers us forgiveness of sins and eternal life when Jesus Christ returns to the earth to set up God’s kingdom.  To accept this offer we need to be baptised into Jesus Christ and obedient to his commands.

Romans 6:3-5 “Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?  Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection.”
